Histopathology

Histopathology is the study of the signs of the disease using the microscopic examination of a biopsy or surgical specimen that is processed and fixed onto glass slides. To visualize different components of the tissue under a microscope, the sections are dyed with one or more stains.

The aim of staining is to reveal cellular components; counter-stains are used to provide contrast. Hematoxylin-Eosin (H&E) staining has been used by pathologists for over a hundred years. Hematoxylin stains cell nuclei blue, while Eosin stains cytoplasm and connective tissue pink. Due to the long history of H&E, well-established methods, and a tremendous amount of data and publications, there is a strong belief among many pathologists that H&E will continue to be the common practice

  • Histopathology is the diagnosis and study of diseases of the tissues, and involves examining tissues and/or cells under a microscope.
  • Histopathologists are doctors who work closely with other clinical specialties. They can reach a diagnosis by examining a small piece of tissue from the skin, liver, kidney or other organ.
  • They examine the tissue carefully under a microscope, looking for changes in cells that might explain what is causing a patient’s illness.

Histopathologists study organs, tissues, cells and genetics to help provide a diagnosis. You'll examine patients' organs and tissues by eye and look at cellular samples under a microscope. You'll also undertake studies to provide diagnostic and prognostic information or determine the cause of death.

Histopathology enables professionals to look for changes in cells that explain the actual cause of the patient's illness. Pathologists are able to reach a diagnosis by examining a small piece of tissue from various organs.

Hematology is a branch of internal medicine that deals with the physiology, pathology, etiology, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and prevention of blood-related disorders. Hematologists focus largely on lymphatic systems and bone marrow and may diagnose blood count irregularities or platelet irregularities.
